“And to the left….is MEXICO!”
My friend Kelli told me this story of traveling on a college choir tour heading west from Texas along the southern US border. The bus driver kept pointing out fun things on the right side of the bus, and he would always follow up with the above exclamation. It’s pretty much the only thing that ever goes through my head anymore when someone mentions Mexico.
So that’s why it’s good that I am NOT going on Kevin’s project trip this summer. I would be constantly saying this under my breath, annoying the snot out of the entire team. As if playing Ninja Photographer does not get annoying enough.
The team will be serving the Love in Action Center for Children. As taken from their website, “LIA was born from the vision of a woman with a traumatic past and a heart for the homeless and hungry children of Mexico. What began as a feeding program out of Anabel Hurtado Martinez’ kitchen has grown into an organization that has cared for over 1000 children in Chapala, Jalisco since its humble beginning in 2000.
“LIA is a home where children who have suffered abuse/abandonment/neglect or were in a high-risk home environment. They minister to the needs of these children by providing homes and a school environment where they can experience emotional healing, eternal salvation through Christ and development of a strong walk with the Lord and ability to contribute to society.”
The scope for the project will be to develop a new master plan for the existing site. They will also develop a conceptual design of a new school building to serve 50-60 students with small 6-8 child class sizes. A photographer has also volunteered to join the team and will be doing portraits of some of the kids.
So this week we shuffle our offspring to various locations, welcome our intern Dillon (his wife, Kristin arrives later), stuff suitcases and camera bags, and don our passports as we head off to different continents.
And as usual, we will have updates on both trips when we return home!
